"Very Annoying Wire Rack, NOT Stainless" 2009-09-27
By nobody
I would really like this product if it was not flawed in a very bad way -- the wire rack, when positioned in the recommended toasting/baking position, has a 1/4" wire that prevents one from sliding their food out and onto a plate. It's as if they made the rack upside down. If one tries to reverse it, the food is too close to the top elements, causing it to burn on top before getting cooked from below. If one tries to place it in the bottom rack, the opposite happens. This is actually quite dangerous -- imagine a child cooking a pizza and then trying to slide it out of the oven and it gets caught on this obstruction and then they apply more force until it spills all over them, scalding their arm or face.

Also, the timer doesn't shut the oven off -- it just beeps! It also has no seconds indicator, but that's sort of minor.

The convection function is nice, but has kind of a loud fan.

This item is NOT stainless throughout -- that's just silver paint on the top and sides.

This takes a long time to toast regular bread and leaves it very dry and way too crunchy on the inside.

For this price, they should have included two types of racks -- one for the higher position, one for the lower position, both with entirely unobstructed smooth wire surfaces. Dangerous at worst, extremely annoying and crumbs all over the place at best. Cooks most food well though (like frozen wings, pizza, appetizers).

 "My favorite appliance!" 2009-09-26
By BeBe (Olive Branch, MS)
This oven has replaced my large and small ovens. I keep it on a cart. After reading the complaints about the crumb tray being in the back, I decided a cart would be a perfect place to keep it. I can get to it at any angle freely.

It preheats very fast, cooks fast, and saves me money and time. I purchased three stones before I ever found the right one to use in it. The best one is a Pampered Chef small stone. It fits perfectly in this toaster oven.

I enjoy cooking open faced sandwiches (Tartine) and this oven cooks them just the way I like them. I have cooked pizzas, biscuits, cookies, stuffed peppers with couscous and eggplant, garlic bread, baked potatoes, french fries. It warms up leftover pizza and leftover french fries nicely. This oven is fantastic. The cookbook that comes with it is terrific; you can go to the Cuisinart Website and get more recipes to use in it. I try new recipes every week, and I have enjoyed every recipe in this cookbook I have tried. I suggest reading the instructions completely and referring to them a lot at first.

I absolutely never use my big oven or even my small oven anymore except for huge amounts of food I cook when my family comes home. Every home should have one of these ovens!

"Great Little Oven with a Limited Life Span" 2009-09-20
By Dave - Free as Can Be (Franklin, TN)
We have had a number of these great little ovens, or their predecessors, over the years and have not found another make that has all of the useful features, sufficient size or quality in the same price range. So if these ovens are so good, why have we bought so many? Well, the convection fan motors begin to wear out after 3-4 years of heavy high temperature use and become noisier as time passes. Eventually the noise becomes loud enough as to be annoying. At that time we will be on the lookout for sales or special offers on a new one. We like this oven so much that we are more than willing to accept that it will not last much over 3-4 years with the heavy use it receives in our kitchen. We have double full size built-in convection ovens in our kitchen, as well as a full size microwave oven above the range, a small infrared oven, and a commercial convection oven stowed away on a cart that we wheel into the kitchen when necessary; but it is the little Cuisinart that gets turned on more than any other oven in our kitchen because it is so useful in cooking or warming smaller items. The Cuisinart gets less use when we are having company of relatives and/or friends that may happen twice a week. All the other times, it is just my wife and I preparing meals for ourselves, and this is when the Cuisinart excels.

We have found that the temperature of the Cuisinart is consistent within its own numerical settings, but may be consistently different from an oven thermometer. In other words, if there is a variance, it remains fairly constant and should be taken into account when cooking. Also, because of the relatively small size of the oven, food will be closer to the heating elements than the heating elements in larger ovens and a reduction in temperature of 25-50 degrees may deliver more even results that the temperature you would use in a larger oven. Also, because of the oven's small size, preheating will make cooking more even as well. The Cuisinart has an aluminum crumb tray that conveniently slides out from the back of the oven. We recommend that you fit non-stick aluminum foil to the crumb tray to keep grease or corrosive burnt food drippings from accumulating on an unprotected crumb tray. Sometimes the cold drippings can be just brushed off the non-stick foil without having to replace the foil as frequently. Also. when cleaning the outside of the glass door and the control panel, use small amounts of liquid cleaner because it can leak into areas underneath the control panel. We have had such a leak, but the oven continued to operate normally.

We recommend the Cuisinart convection/toaster oven without reservation other than the issues discussed above. Otherwise we would have rated it with 5 stars. It is a great little oven with a limited life span.

 "Only one drawback" 2009-09-13
By Christopher Weiss (Okemos, Michigan USA)
We have had this toaster oven for two months, and overall we are very happy. We have teenagers who have burned up multiple toaster ovens by setting the toast time too high and walking away. The digital controls on this toaster oven make this type of error impossible.

The cooking consistency is very good. Sometimes things appear under-toasted on the first cycle until the oven warms up. However, this is a minor inconvenience. We have a large family, and this toaster goes through multiple cycles each morning with bagels, toast, tortillas, pitas, etc.

The only serious drawback we have seen is the metal lip on the door. This gets very hot, and when a reasonably tall person reaches for the door, your fingers are likely to brush up against the metal. My wife and I have been burned at least 3 times each. We now know to give some extra clearance when grasping the handle. You cannot grab it in a fist, or you will burn your knuckles. This tendency to burn yourself on the door rim is the only reason I cannot give this unit 5 stars.

 "Worth the Extra Money" 2009-09-13
By Kenneth Berg (Brandon, FL USA)
Our old toaster oven finally bit the dust, so I researched a replacement. This Cuisinart was a bit more expensive than others that I was considering, but after reading the existing reviews I decided to give it a try. Some of my reasons for deciding on this model were: optional convection baking, large interior, and stainless steel throughout. The convection baking mode shaves time off preperation of many items while also letting you reduce the cooking temperature. The pan is large enough to cook a medium frozen pizza, without having to wait for a full size oven to reach temperature. Besides the time savings there is also the power savings.

There are two things about this product that I would change. First, the baking pan supplied is subject to significant torsion (twisting) if baking for an extended period of time. This has not really bothered me much (and the pan returns to normal flat shape when cooled) but I suspect that it would make baking something like brownie batter a problem. The second item I actually consider a design deficiency. There is a timer built into the unit, but it only buzzes when time has expired and will not turn the cooking elements off. This was a surprise to me, as our previous toaster oven's timer did turn off the power.

Even with these couple of short comings, this is an outstanding appliance that I would highly recommend it to anyone.
